Kenya was introduced to the importance of education early on through the influences of her
parents and her grandfather, Cornelius Handfield Sr., who helped integrate schools. At the age of
12, she pioneered Project F.R.E.S.H. (Fundamentals of Reading, Education, Success, and
Health), a non-profit book drive created to instill and reinforce positivity around reading to
students from grades K-10 in minority communities. Handfield has been recognized by the City
of Miami, City of Opa-Locka, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, University of Miami
Hurricanes football team, and other organizations. As a senior at Booker T. Washington Senior
High School, Handfield is currently the lead ambassador for Vote The Future, a non-partisan
social campaign movement created to spread knowledge to youth and young adults about voting
and the importance of civic and political engagement. Vote The Future has since registered over
1500 youth in Miami-Dade and Broward County to vote.
